Beyond the Trunk or Treat: A Halloween ministry idea for your neighborhood

Our church, First Baptist of Temple, Texas, hosts an incredible Trunk or Treat each Halloween.

Last year, more than 1,200 people from the community attended, and I believe it’s a model of how a Trunk or Treat should be presented. Our family has provided a trunk the past two years. I wrote about Trunk or Treats last Halloween and some of the things they should include and not include.

But this year, as we spend our first Halloween in our new home, I believe Corinn and I are going to do something different — something we used to do when we lived in Missouri. For several years before we moved, we invited our neighbors over to our home on Halloween night.

When trick-or-treating died down (no Halloween pun intended), neighbors would come over. We’d have a pot of chili on the stove. They’d each bring a dish and we’d eat and fellowship for a few hours — just neighbors hanging out with neighbors doing a neighborhood thing.

Not every neighborhood is built for this type of activity, but we live in an active subdivision with a lot of families. We’ve made many friends here, and it seems like it’ll be a good idea this year.
