Churches can learn from WalMart and Target

I hear people complain that the big retail stores are already geared up for Christmas.

A few weeks ago, people were saying: “The stores are already putting out Christmas stuff  but we still haven’t been through Halloween or Thanksgiving.”

Here’s the trick. These mega retailers pay big bucks to know our shopping and spending habits better than we do. They study trends. They know precisely when to begin marketing for upcoming holidays and seasons. They have very intricate marketing plans in place.

And they’re seeing results.

We need to quit complaining and start learning. Churches should have marketing plans too.

If you’ve been in the church any amount of time, you know when the “seasons” are. You know when the pews will be filled to capacity, when you’ll have the best chance to make an impact to your largest groups of people.

If you haven’t been planning for Christmas, you’re late. If Thanksgiving plans aren’t already being executed, you’re really late. Frankly, if you haven’t been meeting about Easter, you’re probably a bit behind as well.

In the Kingdom, are these seasons any more special than a Sunday service in the middle of June? Not especially. But you can’t deny that they’re the times when you’ll see and meet people you’ve never encountered before.

When does your church begin planning for Christmas?
