Why do churches gamble?

Before you throw significant money at any promotional and/or marketing tools — website development, advertising, communication systems, printed materials — please do your research.

Ask a few simple questions.

  • Do you really need it?
  • How are you going to use it once you have it?
  • Are people really going to come to know Christ because of it?
  • Would the money be better spent on ministry?

Also consider: Is there a less-expensive way to get the desired result?

I’ve seen churches launch websites they never update. I’ve seen them purchase advertising that’s never seen. I’ve seen their four-color brochures thrown in the trash.

Websites, advertising and brochures are good marketing tools — if used in proper and strategic ways, and if they are affordable.

The church’s intentions are often good but sometimes the planning is bad.

And throwing good money at a bad plan is gambling.

When it comes to church marketing, we should consider whether $100 toward a brochure is more effective than using that same $100 to feed a family.
