Pay marketers with kindness (and coffee)

A pat on the back or a Starbucks gift card is not a required reward for service in a church.

In fact, when it comes to volunteer service in the church, we should all do our part to spread the Word and expand God’s kingdom for His glory, not ours.

But, gosh, it really is cool when the pastor or a minister stops a volunteer and says, “Thank you. You’re really making a difference.”

Volunteers are often your best church marketing tools. They help with church outreach. They represent your church in the community.

I had a boss that used to send me handwritten notes and cards, thanking me for jobs well done. Sometimes he’d take me to lunch. The gesture wasn’t required or expected. It was his way of acknowledging my efforts. It was nice to be recognized — even if the efforts were part of the job I was being paid to do. When those notes came, I’d find myself doubling my efforts!

Volunteers aren’t paid. They do the work out of obedience to God’s commandment to serve others. The blessing of knowing you’re doing a good job for God is payment enough. But a “thank you” of some sort is a simple kindness that can help motivate your volunteers and let them know their work is meaningful.

And, frankly, everyone can use a free cup of gourmet coffee now and then.
